Buy MacBook Air M3 ($1,099) if: you do general computing, web browsing, Office/productivity, light creative work, or coding. It handles 90%+ of use cases with 18-hour battery in a lightweight, silent (fanless) design. Buy MacBook Pro if: you do sustained heavy workloads (4K video editing, ML training, 3D rendering, large Xcode builds) and need the M3 Pro/Max chip, 120Hz display, more ports (HDMI, SD card slot), or more than 24GB RAM.

MacBook has become the dominant choice among software developers — approximately 70%+ use macOS according to Stack Overflow surveys. Advantages: Unix-based terminal (compatible with Linux servers), excellent build quality, M-series performance for compilation, native iOS/macOS development, and 'it just works' reliability. Windows has better GPU/game support and broader hardware options. Linux (bare metal) offers maximum control. For web/mobile/cloud development, MacBook is the pragmatic choice.

MacBook is not optimized for gaming. Apple Silicon GPUs are capable (Metal API, AAA titles from major studios are increasingly released natively), but the library is a fraction of Windows/Steam. Mac has no dedicated gaming GPU with VRAM comparable to an RTX 4070/4080. If gaming is a priority, a Windows laptop with Nvidia GPU is the better choice. MacBook is suitable for casual games, Apple Arcade titles, and the growing native Mac catalog — but not as a primary gaming machine.
