Arc

Arc is a Chromium-based web browser developed by The Browser Company, launched publicly in 2022 for macOS and 2024 for Windows. Arc reimagines browser UX with a sidebar-based interface, vertical tabs, and Spaces — separate workspaces for different contexts like work, personal, and research. Tabs in Arc are ephemeral by default: unpinned tabs auto-archive after 12 hours, reducing tab hoarding. Pinned items (Favorites and Pinned tabs) persist across sessions. Arc includes a built-in ad blocker, split-view browsing, a note-taking scratchpad, and media controls. Arc for iPhone and the Arc Search mobile app use AI to summarize web pages before loading them (Browse for Me feature). The browser is free with no paid tier, funded by venture capital. Built on Chromium, Arc supports all Chrome extensions. The Browser Company announced in 2024 that Arc's main development would shift toward a new AI-native browser (Dia), leaving Arc's future uncertain. Despite this, Arc has a passionate user base who appreciate its design-forward approach to productivity. Arc appeals most to power users managing many tabs and workflows simultaneously, particularly designers and developers on macOS.
