LastPass is one of the most widely recognized password managers, having introduced millions of users to the concept of centralized password management. Founded in 2008 and acquired by LogMeIn in 2015, LastPass built a large user base through its freemium model and browser extension experience. However, LastPass suffered a catastrophic security breach in 2022 in which threat actors stole encrypted password vaults along with customer metadata. Security researchers concluded the breach was severely underreported and that weak master passwords could put many vaults at risk. Following the breach, a significant portion of users migrated to alternatives like Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane. LastPass has since undergone a security overhaul under new leadership (spun off from LogMeIn in 2021). The platform stores passwords, secure notes, credit cards, and identities with AES-256 encryption. A free plan exists but is limited to one device type (mobile OR desktop). Premium is $3/month. Despite its troubled recent history, LastPass retains a large installed base and has introduced improved security measures including stronger PBKDF2 iterations and enhanced monitoring.
