# Is Rivian Worth Buying in 2026? Honest Review of the R1T and R1S
By Daniel Rozin | A Versus B | May 12, 2027
Rivian launched as an outdoor-adventure EV brand — trucks and SUVs built for camping, off-roading, and hauling, with electric powertrains. The R1T (pickup) and R1S (SUV) have been on the market since 2021 and received significant updates through 2024–2025. In 2026, Rivian has resolved most of its early production quality issues, improved its software, and added access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Here's an honest assessment of whether they're worth buying.

What Rivian Does Better Than Anyone#
Off-Road Capability#
Rivian's air suspension system is the best in the consumer EV segment. The R1T and R1S both offer:
- Ground clearance: Up to 14.9 inches (raised suspension mode)
- Wading depth: Up to 3 feet
- Air suspension modes: Low (freeway efficiency), standard, raised, all-terrain, off-road max
- Independent quad-motor configuration (Quad-Motor trim): Each wheel has its own motor, enabling precise torque vectoring that gas-powered trucks cannot match on uneven terrain
Rivian's Adventure Network Camps and its target customer are explicitly outdoor-focused. The R1T's gear tunnel (unique lockable storage between cab and bed) and the R1S's three-row seating with storage optimization set both vehicles apart from the Tesla Model X and Ford F-150 Lightning.
Quad-Motor Torque Vectoring#
The Quad-Motor configuration (available on both R1T and R1S at ~$89,900–$95,900) puts 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque across four independent motors. This enables precise torque vectoring — sending exactly the right power to each wheel — that creates both extraordinary performance (0–60 mph in 3.0 seconds) and unmatched off-road traction control.
No other production EV does this as effectively as the Rivian Quad-Motor configuration in 2026.
Frunk, Gear Tunnel, and Storage Design#
The R1T's storage design is genuinely clever:
- Front trunk (frunk): 11.1 cubic feet
- Gear tunnel: A lockable storage compartment behind the cab, accessible from either side. Unique to Rivian. Holds gear that's too valuable for the open bed but too dirty for the cabin.
- Bed: 54 cubic feet (5.5-foot bed)
The R1S (SUV) fits 7 passengers with a third row and has 104 cubic feet of cargo space with seats folded — more than any electric SUV except the Tesla Model X.

Where Rivian Falls Short#
Charging Network#
This is Rivian's most significant weakness compared to Tesla.
Tesla Supercharger network (2026): ~45,000 stations, globally. In the US: chargers on most highway corridors, near most major cities, and in suburban areas. Range anxiety on Tesla is largely a historical concern.
Rivian Adventure Network (2026): ~1,200 DC fast-charging stalls across ~300 stations in the US. Geographically concentrated near outdoor destinations (national parks, ski resorts, camping areas). Coverage gaps exist on many interstate corridors.
The Supercharger Access Update (2024): Rivian vehicles with the CCS adapter can now access Tesla Superchargers. This significantly improved Rivian's practical charging coverage. However, Rivian users report that Supercharger stalls during peak hours require waits that Tesla drivers don't experience, and the integration is not as seamless as native Tesla vehicles.
Bottom line on charging: Rivian's charging situation improved dramatically with Supercharger access, but charging anxiety remains higher for Rivian owners than Tesla owners in 2026.
Range#
Rivian's real-world range falls below its EPA estimates when towing or in cold weather, as with all EVs. The 270-mile Dual-Motor Standard configuration will typically see 220–240 miles of real range at highway speeds. For towing near maximum capacity, expect 80–120 miles per charge — sufficient for many use cases but requiring planned charging stops.
Price#
The R1T starts at $69,900 — significantly more than the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro at $49,995 or the Chevy Silverado EV at $48,395 (base work truck). Comparable-spec Lightning and Rivian trims narrow the gap to $10,000–20,000, but the premium is real.

Rivian vs. Tesla Model X and Model Y#
Rivian doesn't directly compete with the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y (sedans/compact SUVs). The more relevant comparison is:
Rivian R1S vs. Tesla Model X:
- R1S leads on off-road capability, ground clearance, and storage innovation (gear tunnel equivalent not available on Model X)
- Model X leads on Supercharger network, Autopilot/FSD capability, and brand service infrastructure
- Price is similar: R1S from $75,900, Model X from $79,990
Rivian R1T vs. Tesla Cybertruck:
- R1T leads on traditional truck usability (conventional bed, conventional cab, no polarizing design)
- Cybertruck leads on range (470 miles for tri-motor), towing (14,000 lbs), and Supercharger native access
- Cybertruck starts lower ($79,990) for comparable towing spec

Who Should Buy Rivian in 2026#
Buy the R1T or R1S if:
- Off-road camping, overlanding, or trail driving is a primary use case
- You want quad-motor independent drive and don't need to compromise on terrain
- You value the Gear Tunnel and storage innovation
- You're comfortable with the current charging situation (Supercharger access + planning)
Skip Rivian if:
- Charging network confidence is your top priority
- Budget is below $70,000
- Your primary use is highway commuting (Tesla Model Y offers better value)
- You prioritize towing (Cybertruck or F-150 Lightning offer more at lower price)
Rivian has resolved most of its launch-era reliability concerns and builds excellent products in 2026. The question is fit — not quality.
