# How to Delete Your Instagram Account Permanently (2026)

By Daniel Rozin | A Versus B | October 17, 2026

Permanently deleting your Instagram account removes everything associated with it — your profile, photos, videos, Reels, Stories, comments, likes, followers, and any other activity. The deletion is irreversible: once completed, Instagram cannot restore your account or its content. If you're not sure you want to delete permanently, Instagram offers a temporary deactivation option instead. This guide covers both, starting with the most important step: downloading your data before you do anything else.

Step 1: Download Your Instagram Data (Do This First)#

Before deleting your account, download a copy of everything you've posted. Instagram provides a data export tool that packages your photos, videos, messages, and account information into a downloadable file.

On mobile (iOS or Android):

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture (bottom right).
  2. Tap the three-line menu (≡) in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Your activity, then Download your information.
  4. Tap Download or transfer information.
  5. Select your account, then tap Download to device.
  6. Choose a date range (or "All time") and a format (HTML is human-readable; JSON is useful for data analysis).
  7. Tap Create files. Instagram will email you a link when the export is ready — typically within 24–48 hours.

On desktop:

  1. Go to instagram.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right, then click Settings.
  3. Click See more in Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  4. Click Download your information and follow the prompts.

Save the downloaded file somewhere secure before proceeding with deletion.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account#

Instagram's permanent account deletion moved to Meta Accounts Center in 2023. You cannot delete your Instagram account from the account settings within the Instagram app itself — you must use Accounts Center.

On mobile (iOS or Android):

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap ≡ (three lines), then tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Scroll down and tap Accounts Center.
  4. Tap Personal details, then tap Account ownership and control.
  5. Tap Deactivation or deletion.
  6. Select the Instagram account you want to delete (if you have multiple).
  7. Tap Delete account, then tap Continue.
  8. Instagram will ask you to select a reason for deleting. Select one and tap Continue.
  9. Enter your Instagram password to confirm.
  10. Tap Delete account.

On desktop:

  1. Go to accountscenter.meta.com and log in.
  2. Click Personal details.
  3. Click Account ownership and control.
  4. Click Deactivation or deletion.
  5. Select your Instagram account and click Delete account.
  6. Follow the confirmation prompts, enter your password, and confirm.

According to Meta's Help Center, your account and all its content will be permanently deleted within 30 days of the request [^1]. During those 30 days, your account is hidden from other users, but you can log back in and cancel the deletion if you change your mind.

After 30 days, deletion is complete and irreversible.

How to Deactivate Instagram Temporarily (Instead of Deleting)#

Deactivating hides your profile, photos, and activity from other users but does not delete anything. You can reactivate simply by logging back in.

On mobile or desktop:

  1. Follow the same steps as above through Deactivation or deletion.
  2. Select Deactivate account instead of "Delete account."
  3. Choose a reason and confirm with your password.

Deactivation is available once per week. When you're ready to return, log back in and your account reactivates automatically.

What Happens to Your Instagram Data After Deletion?#

Per Meta's Privacy Policy, some information may be retained after account deletion for legal compliance, safety, and fraud prevention purposes — for example, if your account was involved in a reported content dispute [^2]. However:

  • Your profile, photos, videos, and public posts are removed within 30 days.
  • Direct messages you sent to other users may remain visible to those recipients even after your account is deleted.
  • Information Facebook (Meta) received through the Instagram platform (such as login data for third-party sites where you used "Log in with Instagram") may be retained separately.

If you want to minimize retained data, review and revoke third-party app permissions before deleting: go to Settings and privacyApps and websites and revoke access to any apps that connected through your Instagram account.

Troubleshooting: Common Issues When Deleting Instagram#

"I can't find the Delete account option in settings." Instagram moved account deletion to Accounts Center (not the main app settings) in late 2023. Go through accountscenter.meta.com on desktop or tap Accounts Center inside Settings and privacy in the app.

"I forgot my password." Use the "Forgot password?" option on the login screen. You must be able to log in to delete your account — Instagram does not allow deletion without authentication.

"I want to delete just the app, not the account." Deleting the app from your phone does not delete your account. Your profile and data remain on Instagram's servers and other users can still see your profile. You must follow the steps above to actually delete the account.

"I want to keep my username but delete the content." Instagram does not offer a "wipe but keep the account" option. You can manually delete individual posts, but there is no bulk delete feature built into the app. Third-party tools (like Mass Delete for Instagram) can automate bulk deletion if you want to clear content without closing the account.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How long does it take to permanently delete an Instagram account? After confirming the deletion, Instagram begins the process immediately but takes up to 30 days to fully remove all data. The account becomes hidden immediately.

Can I get my Instagram account back after deleting it? No — once the 30-day window passes, the account and all its data are permanently gone. During those 30 days, you can cancel by logging back in.

Will deleting Instagram delete my Facebook account? No — Instagram and Facebook are separate accounts even though they're linked through Meta Accounts Center. Deleting one does not affect the other.

What happens to my Instagram username after deletion? Your username becomes available to other users after your account is permanently deleted (after the 30-day waiting period).
